Golfing in Nepal

Golfing in Nepal A collection of sensational golf packages to leading golf regions and resorts around Nepal. Most popular holiday destination is a true golf paradise with perfect weather year round and a collection of sensational resort style courses.

When people imagine Nepal, they think of Himalayan mountains, of exotic temples and tranquil villages, of trekking, of rafting, and of touring and shopping. The local hospitality and friendliness prevailing on the streets manifests in the courses. Golfing Nepal is like being in an enchanted sanctuary, not a golf course. But unknown to most of the world, there are unpolished gems still relatively untapped in this Shangri-La of Asia – wonderful golf courses to be played and experienced. Currently Nepal is home to five public golf courses: Gokarna Forest Golf Resort and Royal Nepal Golf Course in Kathmandu, Himalayan Golf Club and Fulbari Resort Golf Course in Pokhara and Nirvana Country Club in Dharan. Each is unique and enjoyable in separate ways.

Royal Nepal Golf Club, perched conjointly on the sloping land alongside the airport strip at Tilganga. Established in 1829 by the ruling Ranas, the course was given royal status in 1911 and claims to be one of the oldest golf clubs in Asia.

Tucked away about six kilometers away from the city of Pokhara is the Himalayan Golf Club. This incredible 9 hole golf course measures 3400 yards from the championship tees and incorporates links features in the most stunning natural setting. The course is located in a beautiful amphit heater- like setting of a river canyon with a panoramic view of the Annapurna Himalayan range.

Located just 10 km to the east of Kathmandu, the Gokarna Forest Golf Resort is without doubt the crowning jewel of Nepal’s golf community. A total of 6715 yards, the par 72 course is Nepal’s sole international standard 18 hole layout, designed by internationally acclaimed designer David Kidd. The facility plays host to a number of professional and amateur tournaments for players all over Asia each year including the Surya Nepal Masters which was held at the course from 20 Nov – 23 Nov. For the golfing nut, playing golf in this country is more than just 18 holes of masochistic frustration placing a little white ball in a 3 and ¾ inch hole in the ground – it offers a unique golfing experience unlike any other in the world.

Hunting in Nepal

In this ecological awakening age hunting seems quite contradictory but Nepal has been a favored ground for hunters since 9th century. In the Himalayan Kingdom, controlled hunting is allowed with proper license and certain seasons of the year. Hunting license is issued by the Department of National Park and Wildlife Conservation in Kathmandu and there are a few hunting outfitters who can make arrangements.

The organized hunting parties trek or fly (helicopter) into the high terrain areas in quest of the Himalayan Tahr and the Blue Sheep. Mid-elevation prizes include wild goat and sheep; in the Terai lowlands deer are sought. Hunting in Nepal is permitted only in designated areas, and a licensed guide must accompany hunting parties.

Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve is one of the prime habitats of blue sheep, a highly prized trophy animal, which is the main target of hunters. Other game species are Ghoral, Serow, Himalayan Tahr, Black Bear Pheasant and Partridge. Endangered species of the area include the red panda and cheer pheasant.

Besides hunting, Dhorpatan is also an attractive destination for the trekker and wildlife enthusiast as protection has enabled animal numbers to increase in this rarely visited area.

Dhorpatan can be reached from Pokhara within the 5 days of hike away or there is also the option of flying to Dolpa. The best time to visit Dhorpatan is February-April and August-October. Accommodation here is on tented camp which can be provided by the organizing agencies or at one of the villages.
